"Arial","sans-serif";">The Orbiting
Carbon Observatory was the first NASA mission designed
to measure atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>)
with the sensitivity, coverage, and resolution needed to
quantify CO<sub>2</sub> sources and sinks on regional
scales and characterize their variability over the
seasonal cycle. This project suffered a major setback in
February 2009, when its launch vehicle failed to reach
orbit.<span style=""> </span>In early 2010, NASA
authorized a “carbon copy” of OCO, called OCO-2, which
is currently on track for launch in early 2013. The
OCO-2 instrument will collect high-resolution,
co-boresited spectra of reflected sunlight in the CO<sub>2</sub>
bands centered near 1610 and 2060 nm, and in the
molecular oxygen (O<sub>2</sub>) A-band centered near
764 nm. <span style="">It will record 12 to 24
soundings/second, yielding 200 to 400 soundings per
degree of latitude over the sunlit portion of the
orbit. </span>Between 5 and 30% of these soundings
are expected to be sufficiently cloud and aerosol free
to retrieve full-column estimates of the column-averaged
CO<sub>2</sub> dry air mole fraction, X<sub>CO2</sub>,
with accuracies of ~0.3% (1 ppm out of the ambient 390
ppm background).<span style=""> </span>The O<sub>2</sub>
A-band measurement from each of these soundings will
also be analyzed to estimate surface pressure, with an
accuracy of ~1 hPa. CO<sub>2</sub> and O<sub>2</sub>
measurements currently being collected by the Japanese
Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite, GOSAT, are being
analyzed to improve the retrieval algorithms,
calibration methods, and validation techniques for
OCO-2.<span style=""> </span>This presentation will
provide an overview of the status and plans for the
OCO-2 mission, and will summarize the progress to date
with the analysis of GOSAT data</span><span
style="font-size: 10pt; font-family:
