style="font-family: Times-Roman;">GPS</span></st1:stockticker><span
style="font-family: Times-Roman;">) radio occultation (RO) data are
not contaminated by clouds, making them ideally suited to cloud
profiling on a global basis. This study consists of two parts: Part I
compares COSMIC RO in-cloud refractivity profiles with those of
National Centers for Environmental Prediction and </span><st1:place><st1:PlaceName><span
style="font-family: Times-Roman;">National</span></st1:PlaceName><span
style="font-family: Times-Roman;"> </span><st1:PlaceType><span
style="font-family: Times-Roman;">Center</span></st1:PlaceType></st1:place><span
style="font-family: Times-Roman;"> for Atmospheric Research
(NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis and ECMWF analysis; and part II presents a new </span><st1:stockticker><span
style="font-family: Times-Roman;">GPS</span></st1:stockticker><span
style="font-family: Times-Roman;"> RO cloudy retrieval algorithm as
well as some preliminary results. Major findings include: (i) When
COSMIC RO soundings are compared with NCEP and ECMWF analyses in cloudy
and clear sky conditions separately, a systematic bias of opposite sign
is found under cloudy and clear sky conditions; and (ii) Compared with
the standard </span><st1:stockticker><span
style="font-family: Times-Roman;">GPS</span></st1:stockticker><span
style="font-family: Times-Roman;"> RO wet temperature retrieval, the </span><st1:stockticker><span
style="font-family: Times-Roman;">GPS</span></st1:stockticker><span
style="font-family: Times-Roman;"> cloudy retrieval algorithm produced
a more realistic mean profile of lapse rate within clouds.</span><span
