DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Research, in collaboration with the Assistant Director, and under general direction of both the Vice Chancellor Marine Sciences (VC-MS) and the Deputy Director of Research (DDR) incumbent provides administrative advice and oversight on a wide range of institutional matters. Incumbent is responsible for providing supervision and work direction to Vice Chancellor administrative staff. Develops and/or revises strategies and policies, and undertakes projects to further the aims of SIO/UCSD.

This part-time career position is a highly visible, interactive, and inclusive position that requires direct and continuous collaboration with the leadership of all components of SIO leadership including sections, research divisions/labs/institutes, business offices, academic personnel, development, Birch Aquarium, communications/media relations, government and international relations, as well as UC-wide campuses, departments, schools, VC areas, and central campus administrative units. Oversees pilot projects and assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Deputy Director of Research in his/her absence. Investigates and resolves sensitive issues to solve public and in house queries for resources, visitation, committees, and policies. Plans and leads projects and tasks in support of SIO's broad research mission, which is international in scope and complexity.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A Master’s Degree in a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Prior exposure to understanding and discussing basic scientific concepts, research projects, and proposals with scientists; able to understand and discuss space requirements, program needs, goals with scientists.

Proven experience in project and program management. Proven ability to develop guidelines and metrics to shepherd projects and programs to completion.

Proven leadership skills in creating a climate of trust and respect in aligning strategic initiatives and operational goals with the mission, values and business needs.

Knowledge of academic governance, instructional, and research programs.

Proven capacity to understand and synthesize technical research literature and ability to summarize it.

Knowledge of State and Federal rules, and regulations regarding research affairs and administration.

Strong critical thinking and applied problem-solving skills to research and analyze complex information.

Proven success working independently, make decisions, develop and implement appropriate and creative solutions/suggestions.

Prior experience gathering data, developing and analyzing results and provide recommendations.

Exceptional interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills with diverse groups.

Expertise in assimilating, from verbal or written sources, a broad knowledge of campus, university, and public policies and procedures and apply them with consistency to individual situations.

Demonstrated experience functioning at a high level and representing/communicating the employer's best interests at all times.

Demonstrated and working knowledge of basic business and office software including email, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
