Technician for Raman Microspectrometric and

Atomic Force Microscopy Laboratory

The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) of Stony Brook University seeks applicants for the position of Technician for Raman Microspectrometric and Atomic Force Microscopy Laboratory (Instructional Support Technician). The incumbent will have responsibility for daily management and operation of the newly created nano-RAMAN Molecular Imaging Facility, a multi-user laboratory within SoMAS. The position will serve SBU's research and education programs, providing novel analytical capabilities to faculty and students from SoMAS, the wider campus community and off-campus. Instrumentation is capable of providing high-resolution (<50 nm) 3-D images of a sample's topography, fluorescence and distribution of chemical functionalities. Instrument is amenable to interrogating single cells, liquids, particles, solid surfaces and gases maintained anywhere from -196 to +600°C. The incumbent will provide analyses as well as train and oversee graduate, undergraduate, faculty and staff in the safe operation of the facility's instruments as well as in data manipulation.

Facility features: a Renishaw Invia Confocal Raman Microspectrometer with four laser lines (457, 514, 632, 785 nm) on a Leica epifluorescent microscope platform with computer-controlled stage as well as a Linkam temperature-control chamber. Spectrometer is coupled to a Bruker Innova Atomic Force Microscope to provide topographic maps and tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) spectra. Facility also includes a Perkin-Elmer UV-Vis scanning spectrophotometer, Shimadzu spectrofluorometer, a Turner Designs luminometer, computers and printer. The incumbent will operate and maintain these instruments and provide technical support to faculty, students and other clients.

Required qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in natural or physical sciences or engineering. Two (2) years' experience in vibrational spectroscopy. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills and have the ability to analyze and solve problems independently.

Preferred qualifications: Master's degree natural or physical sciences or engineering. Experience with application of confocal Raman Microspectroscopy to biological and environmental samples; experience with Atomic Force Microscopy; equipment maintenance and repair; experience with Windows computer (Office, etc.), data backup, and web site management; lab management and administrative (purchasing, tracking expenses and billing) experience. Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating excellent troubleshooting skills, ingenuity, knowledge and experience regarding lab safety and compliance.

JOB DUTIES:

Operation, maintenance, and minor repairs of Confocal Raman Microspectrometer and Atomic Force Microscope systems:

  * The laboratory houses approximately 0.5 million dollars of new state-of-the-art instrumentation and data acquisition systems, upon which research activities of numerous faculty across campus depend. Incumbent is entirely responsible for these assets, and will respond to off-hour facility-related emergencies when needed.

Method development:

  * Research requires development of new approaches to obtain meaningful spectra, images and topographic maps from samples that challenge detection limits or are inherently fragile.
  * Work requires significant patience, independent effort and skills, critical decision-making, technical expertise and ingenuity.

Sample analysis:

  * Because almost none of the samples to be analyzed will be routine, conducting sample analysis requires close scrutiny, adept troubleshooting, and meticulous quality assurance/control to avoid costly re-analysis of samples.
  * Additionally, acquired data must be post-processed using standard spectrum interpretational software that requires in-depth understanding of instrument and vibrational spectroscopy.

Training of students, postdocs and faculty on equipment:

  * Incumbent is responsible for training all potential users of the instrumental and data systems safely and correctly.

Scheduling:

  * Incumbent will be responsible for scheduling of instrument use (performed by incumbent or other trained personnel) for internal and external contract work.
  * Incumbent will manage calendar and update schedule on facility's web page for which s/he will be responsible.

Billing/Lab administration:

  * Incumbent will keep records of instrument usage and facility expenses in order to assist supervisors with billing to inside and outside users. Incumbent will be responsible for interacting with clients, documenting and supervising QA/QC protocols and reporting in the laboratory.
  * Incumbent will facilitate any needed purchasing of equipment, supplies, or services related to this facility, and will ensure lab safety protocols are followed to keep the facility in compliance with established standards.

This position offers a full benefits package and an initial salary of $55,800. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on June 30, 2015. Further information about this position and SoMAS can be found at www.SoMAS.stonybrook.edu/about/empopps.html.
