COCONet Graduate Fellowships

Award Description

The Continuously Operating Caribbean Observational Network (COCONet) project funded by the National Science Foundation seeks applicants for two graduate research fellowships starting in August or September of 2014. The COCONet Graduate Fellowships would provide individual awards between $5,000 and $10,000 per year for a maximum of 2 years to support solid Earth or atmospheric science graduate research projects conducted at a U.S. institution of higher education. The research projects must be within the COCONet footprint or directly use data from the COCONet GPS stations and/or meteorological sensors.

Application Process

Applicants should submit a one-page cover letter explaining their interests and qualifications, a one-page description of their research plan and its connection to COCONet, a curriculum vitae, a one-page statement of support from their U.S.-based graduate research advisor, official university transcripts, and two additional letters of reference (excluding the research advisor). All application materials except for the official transcripts and two letters of reference should be submitted electronically as a single PDF document. Students from nations within the COCONet footprint are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should submit their materials as a single PDF document by email with subject heading: “Application for [Full Name of Applicant]”.

The two additional letters of reference should be submitted by email with subject heading: “Reference for [Full Name of Applicant]”.

Official transcripts in electronic form can be submitted by email or official hardcopies should be mailed to UNAVCO, 6350 Nautilus Drive, Boulder CO 80301, Attn: COCONet Fellowships.

Deadline

The deadline for the submission of all materials is 15 June 2014.

Additional Stipulations

The successful COCONet Fellow will receive an individual award for one year, with the possibility of additional funding for a second year. The fellowship award will support solid Earth or atmospheric science graduate research work conducted at a U.S. institution of higher education. The research work must be within the COCONet footprint or directly use data from the COCONet GPS stations and/or meteorological sensors. The COCONet fellow will be required to submit a semi-annual (6 months after award date) and annual report (12 months after award date) of research progress. Additional funding will be contingent upon adequate research progress and the availability of funds.
