Full-time Position in Meteorology / Atmospheric Sciences
The Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is seeking versatile and
highly motivated candidates for a full-time position in the Atmospheric
Technologies Group (ATG). The ATG conducts a comprehensive applied
meteorology program for the U. S. Department of Energy?s Savannah River
Site in South Carolina, and performs atmospheric research for U.S.
national security interests in the areas of international nuclear
nonproliferation, emergency response, carbon science, climate change, and
renewable energy.
The successful candidate will be responsible for: coordinating the ongoing
development and realtime application of ATG?s regional atmospheric
modeling system for emergency response; serving as ATG?s technical liaison
with SRS, local, and state officials for emergency response modeling
products and services; coordinating operations of ATG?s meteorological
forecast facility to ensure reliable acquisition and dissemination of
incoming data streams, including NOAAPort; preparing meteorological
forecasts, meteorological data sets and climatological analyses for
numerous SRS clients; and providing expert consultations and analyses on a
variety of applied problems including regulatory-based atmospheric
dispersion modeling for air quality and nuclear safety assessments. The
selected candidate may also team with other ATG scientists on a variety of
research projects, including participation in field experiments involving
sampling airborne contaminants.
ATG?s assets includes a comprehensive local network of meteorological
towers with extensive databases, LIDAR, field deployable SODAR, a 30-meter
carbon flux tower, a 330 meter Tall Tower facility equipped for
meteorological and trace gas measurements, and a dedicated
high-performance computing cluster.
Qualifications: A MS or PhD in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences with 5
to 15 years of broad experience in applied atmospheric modeling, weather
forecasting, and meteorological instrumentation, data collection, and
analysis. In addition, the successful candidate must possess excellent
written and oral communication skills, and must have working familiarity
with the regulatory requirements/guidance applicable to emergency
response, air quality modeling, and meteorological monitoring (EPA, NRC,
DOE).
