POSITION AVAILABLE
THE RESEARCH FOUNDATION OF THE
  STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK
UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY
DEPARTMENT OF EARTH AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES
SYNOPTIC-DYNAMIC GROUP

A Postdoctoral Research Associate Position will become available
in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, University at Albany/SUNY,
after 1 July 2003. Support for this position will be provided by a new three
year NSF grant entitled "A Multiscale Diagnostic and Prognostic
Investigation of
Environmental Influences on Tropical Cyclone Life Cycles". The applicant will
be expected to contribute to diagnostic and prognostic research directed toward
gaining a better understanding of tropical cyclone life cycles ranging from
genesis to extratropical transition. In this capacity the applicant will need
to demonstrate that he/she has a thorough understanding of the behavior of
synoptic and mesoscale weather systems. It is also expected that the applicant
will take the lead on initiating prognostic studies of genesis and
extratropical
transition process using the NCAR/Penn State MM5 mesoscale model and
the Weather
Research Forecast Model (WRF). The applicant will also be expected to interact
with project-supported graduate students and other faculty members on a variety
of research problems.

Preference will be given to applicants with previous MM5/WRF experience
and who are capable of processing global gridded NCEP/ECMWF datasets
archived at
national centers such as NCAR. Experience with SUN UNIX-based
computer systems,
GEMPAK, and NCAR graphics software packages is highly desirable. The initial
appointment will be for two years. A Ph.D. in atmospheric science/meteorology
is required with special emphasis on synoptic and mesoscale meteorology,
numerical weather prediction, and atmospheric dynamics.
