Dear Colleague:

We invite you to consider applying for the job of NCAR Science Advisor.
This is a half-time position intended to enhance communication
and collaboration between the NCAR Executive Committee and Directors'
Committee, and the scientific staff as represented by the NCAR
Scientists' Assembly (NSA). In brief,

(1) The Science Advisor participates, with full voting rights, in
all meetings of the NCAR Executive Committee. The Science Advisor
advises the NCAR Director, performs special tasks for the Director's
Office, and facilitates communication among the members of the NSA,
particularly on science-planning issues.

(2) In order to ensure that this position is responsive to and
representative of the views of the scientific staff, the Science Advisor
will be selected by the NSA Executive Committee and supervised by the
Co-Chairs thereof. In turn, the Co-Chairs are appointed by the NSA
Executive Committee.

The term for the position is one year, with the option to serve a second
year. A job description is available on the NSA website:

If you are interested in being considered for this position, please
contact
Rolando Garcia (rgarcia at ucar.edu) or Rick Katz (rwk at ucar.edu).

Piotr Smolarkiewicz is presently serving as NCAR Science Advisor, with
his
term ending 20 November 2006; it is anticipated that a new Science
Advisor
will be appointed on 21 November 2006.

This position offers you the chance to help make a difference in NCAR's
future. You will help formulate future policy directions by representing
the views of the science staff at the highest level of NCAR management.
Although this implies a high level of commitment (formally half-time),
it does not carry the day-to-day responsibilities of running a Division
or Laboratory.

We hope that you will give careful consideration to serving as NCAR
Science Advisor. Please feel free to contact either of us, or the
present Science Advisor, Piotr Smolarkiewicz, should you have any
questions
regarding the position.

Sincerely,

Rolando Garcia and Rick Katz
Co-Chairs
NSA Executive Committee
