    <p>The easiest NCL solution is that the transparency value would
      become an array. An ability to have no colors drawn at all (even
      background) for contouring outside of a specified range would also
      work.</p>

        the variable and replace the categories you want to be
        transparent with missing values. That way they won’t be
        colored. </div>
