remove the first $ sign, i meant just type:
echo $SHELL

It should return:
/bin/bash

just thought might be useful to double-check.

Umm, i am not an expert, but i think .bashrc reads .profile if one 
exists, should be Ok. I am not sure what is causing your problem, others 
may have better suggestions, hopefully.
