<p>I moved the zipped NCL binary to a new directory called
/usr/share/ncl-6.4.0 <br>
</p>
<p>and unzipped the archive using: <br>
</p>
<p>tar -zxvf ncl_ncarg-6.4.0-Debian8.6_64bit_gnu492.tar.gz.</p>
<p>Three subdirectories were created under /usr/share/ncl-6.4.0
called ./bin, ./share, and ./lib.</p>
<p>I modified the ~/.bashrc by adding:</p>
<p># settings for NCL smcc 28 Oct/2017<br>
export NCARG_ROOT=/usr/share/ncl-6.4.0<br>
export PATH=$NCARG_ROOT/bin:$PATH<br>
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libssl.so.1.0.0<br>
export NCARG_RANGS=/usr/share/ncl-6.4.0/lib/ncarg/database/rangs</p>
<p>This is a new computer that has no previous NCL install.</p>
<p>Here are the results of the commands that you asked me to run:</p>
<p>smcc@jaguar:~$ which ncl<br>
/usr/share/ncl-6.4.0/bin/ncl<br>
smcc@jaguar:~$ env | grep NCARG<br>
