At the meeting I am attending, Valentine Anantharaj gave a presentation that talked about Adios. Adios is an ORNL-built tool. With CAM-SE, ORNL has used Adios as the parallel i/o facility (at least for the restarts). It seems to support netCDF and unstructured grid. http://www.olcf.ornl.gov/center-projects/adios/
