Dear Colleagues,

Although U.S. weather prediction has made significant strides
during the past several decades, there are a number of signs that
American weather prediction and research are not living up to their
potential. At the same time, the weather prediction enterprise has
changed substantially and there is increasing debate on how the
various parts of the enterprise should work together.

Many of us believe the time has come to bring the community
together to have a frank discussion of our strengths and weaknesses
and how we can work together most effectively in the future. To that
end the American Meteorological Society, in partnership with a number
of other organizations, is sponsoring a Community Meeting on the
Future of the U.S. Weather Prediction Enterprise on July 26-28, 2005
at the University of Colorado Centerplate Conference Center in
Boulder, CO.

This meeting is open to all members of the weather prediction
enterprise ranging from those participating in operational prediction
and weather-related research, to weather user communities and those
disseminating weather forecasts. Information about the meeting,
including a detailed agenda and online registration can be found at
<http://www.dtcenter.org/events/wxprediction2005.php>http://www.dtcenter.org/events/wxprediction2005.php.
As you can see from the agenda, this gathering does not avoid
controversial topics and is designed to foster discussion.

The meeting is first come, first serve, registration is
limited, and we ask that you register soon. If you have any
questions about this gathering, please contact George Frederick
(george.frederick at vaisala.com) or Cliff Mass
(cliff at atmos.washington.edu).
