A colleague and I have a new 3-year grant coming in for a NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed project. We’re funded to more thoroughly study a vulnerability mapping tool that we made for two Alabama NWS Forecast Offices: Birmingham and Huntsville. The idea is that
the extra information might — that’s what we going to look at — alter how forecasters are communicating with emergency managers and the public, especially when acute vulnerabilities exist, to lower the potential impact of severe weather on those areas/people.
We’re also incorporating two experimental products from the NOAA Storm Prediction Center (<a href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov" class="">https://www.spc.noaa.gov</a>) to see how those might assist in a stream of communications that focus in on a potential severe
weather event, and will be working closely with SPC on this project. <br class="">

My colleague and I both have our Ph.D.s in social sciences, so we are hiring a 3-year STEM post-doc to help us. We need someone who would like to work on the research-to-operations divide, has strong Linux skills, can move large datasets around, and can do
enough with HTML to get by. Prior experience with AWIPS is a plus but can be learned on the job. They will be helping us with the mechanics of running the testbed project, which will be in Norman next spring/summer, and then be a traveling testbed for a week
at a time to several WFOs in years 2 and 3 of the grant. We are looking for someone who is also interested in the research itself, and wanting to be part of our science team. This job will position the postdoc well in both skills and the resulting research
track record to network throughout the National Weather Center, and NOAA more generally, for permanent applied research positions following this postdoc. <br class="">

This project speaks directly to NOAA’s FACETs vision (https://owaq.noaa.gov/Programs/FACETs) and is on the forefront of better exploiting the latest advances in the science of severe weather to help minimize casualties (e.g., NOAA’s Weather Ready Nation goals). <br class="">
