Job Description:

PLEASE NOTE: This is a new, full-time two-year term position. Initial  
consideration will be given to applications received prior to Friday,  
November 6, 2009. Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an  
as-needed basis.



NCAR - Research Applications Laboratory (RAL)

BASIC JOB FUNCTION: Conducts original research in petascale computing  
with applications in the atmospheric and related sciences or other  
research areas at NCAR and documents that research in publications.  
Seeks to broaden understanding of atmospheric science and other  
research areas at NCAR by interacting widely with scientists and other  
postdoctoral researchers at NCAR.



DUTIES INCLUDE:



Conducts independent or collaborative research leading to results  
worthy of publication in scientific journals.



Documents results of research in journal publications and publicizes  
those results in seminars and conference presentations.



Develops a plan for a research project to be conducted at NCAR. Seeks  
advice on the feasibility of this plan from the NCAR scientific staff  
but assumes primary responsibility for selecting and planning the  
project.



Learns about aspects of NCAR science outside the past experience of  
the fellow by interacting with other postdoctoral fellows and with the  
NCAR scientific staff.



Participates in seminars, research reports and other organized  
scientific discussions and team discussions.



Pursues other activities that advance the professional growth of the  
fellow. These activities may include contributing to NCAR/UCAR  
educational programs, serving on committees, attending workshops,  
participating in the construction of proposals, reviewing scientific  
papers and proposals etc.



REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:



Education and Experience:



     * Ph.D. in computational science, applied mathematics or  
geoscience and involving geophysical turbulence science; or
     * must be able to complete such a degree and finish all thesis  
revisions and defense before starting the NCAR appointment.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



     * Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment and creativity.
     * Ability to show independence and leadership in problem solving.
     * Ability to conduct research with minimal supervision.
     * Ability to prioritize research and focus on the most productive topics.
     * Ability to bridge between collaborators from numerical as well  
as geophysical perspectives.
     * Skill in oral and written communication.
