TITLE: Models of Clouds and Atmospheric Waves in the Tropics
TIME: Friday, 20 March 2009, 4:00 PM
PLACE: ECCR 1B55

ABSTRACT:

In the tropics, cloud systems are often organized by atmospheric waves
with periods of 2 to 30 days, and these waves play an important role
in the dynamics of global weather and climate. Despite the prominence
of these waves in observations, their physical mechanisms are not
understood well, and they are poorly represented in numerical models
of the global atmosphere. In this talk I will present mathematical
models that shed some light on these issues. The models include a
blend of theory and numerics for new nonlinear PDE and multi-scale
asymptotic models.
