The Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) is pleased to announce the beta release of version 1.0 of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) system. This is the first release to the community of this operational system. The beta release is intended for friendly users only. The DTC will start full user support (helpdesk, webpage, documentation, onsite tutorial) once the system is officially released, currently scheduled for the summer of 2015. Currently, friendly users may send comments and questions to gsi_help at ucar.edu.
The beta code can be downloaded at
and a draft Users Guide can be downloaded at
The NOAA EnKF system is an ensemble data assimilation system primarily developed by NOAA. It has been operational at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) NCEP as part of its Global Forecast System Hybrid Variational Ensemble Data Assimilation System (GDAS), together with the Gridpoint Statstical Interpolation (GSI) variational data assimilation system, since 2012. This EnKF system shares observation operators with GSI and, therefore, can assimilate the same types of observations as GSI, including both conventional and satellite (e.g., radiance) observations.
The DTC (http://www.dtcenter.org/) is a member of the joint Data Assimilation Review Committee for GSI and EnKF, along with system development teams at NOAA, NCEP, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), NCAR, the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA), and the University of Maryland. The DTC is currently providing central support for GSI and other NWP models.
This release is sponsored by NOAA HFIP and OAR.
