post doc, or if one fits the criteria desired by Georgetown, but Vicki
Arroyo is looking for help from scientists to communicate the effects of
climate change - specifically the impacts of severe weather, sea level
rise and urban heat issues - to policy makers. She'd like someone to
visit Georgetown for two weeks to a month to help her team out,
preferably between now and November of this year. the UVISIT program and
Vicki's group could pay travel and living expenses, but not salary. What
do you think, might someone be interested from the current or incoming
ASP group? Rachel
ps here are the details on what Vicki is looking for specifically:
The visiting scientist(s) will lend her/his expertise to inform and
participate in an initiative to engage state officials, key
stakeholders, and science academic
experts in dialogues to improve communications about climate change
science, impacts, and resilience. The scientist(s) should have a strong
interest in
effectively communicating their work to more general audiences (educated
but nonscientific) and have expertise in climate change impacts,
including one or more
of the following impacts: sea-level rise, flooding, or severe storms,
heat and drought.
Georgetown Climate Center is collaborating with NCAR and UCAR on this
initiative to produce communication materials for decision makers and
conduct outreach to
develop a constructive dialogue in select states and regions
particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. The Center’s role as
a convener and a trusted
resource to state and local governments enables it to provide state
officials and thought leaders with scientific information framed in
clear and policy-relevant
language from credible sources. The valuable roles played by the
visiting scientist(s), in collaboration with the Center, will include:
helping ensure scientific
accuracy of the communications materials; providing regional scientific
expertise to highlight specific state/regional climate vulnerabilities;
and serving as an
expert resource for state officials that will ideally extend beyond the
length of this exchange program. In turn, the scientist(s) will be
provided opportunities
such as communications/media training and connections to policy makers
and the media to communicate their expertise.
In addition to working with the Center, the visiting scientist(s) will
have potential opportunities to lecture in various classes at Georgetown
University on its different campuses in Washington, DC. This includes
classes at the Georgetown School of Law and courses in policy and the
sciences. The visiting scientist(s) participating in fall 2013 would
also have an opportunity to take part in an upcoming Georgetown speakers
series.
Length of Visit: Two weeks to one month, depending on the availability
of a scientist(s) who works on climate change impacts. Brief visits of
about 2 weeks by
a series of NCAR staff would also be valuable.
Dates of Visit:
June – November 2013 depending on availability
