          <td colspan="2" align="center" valign="top" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"><p align="left">Addressing public policy problems in an increasingly complex world relies heavily on communication, interpretation, and use of information. Media are one primary source through which information is disseminated, consumed, and framed. Media are frequently referenced in the policy literature as important mechanisms for policy change, a tool through which stakeholders influence policy outcomes, or a measure of policy agendas. In this presentation, I argue that scholars tend to simplify, overstate, or misconstrue the influences that media can have on policy outcomes. This presentation seeks to integrate these contributions from public policy, political science, mass communication, and journalism studies to present what we know and do not know about media influence in the policy process. This presentation outlines the criteria from which policy scholars should begin a robust discussion of the media-policy relationship beyond our previous attempts to do so, attempting to more accurately describe and analyze media influences on policy processes.</p>

            <p>Bio: Assistant Professor Deserai Anderson Crow is on the Environmental Studies faculty at the University of Colorado Boulder. She is Associate Director of the Center for Environmental Journalism and affiliated with the Center for Science &amp; Technology Policy Research. She joined the faculty of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 2008 and moved to the Environmental Studies Program in 2012. Crow earned her PhD from Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences and a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Colorado at Denver’s School of Public Affairs. Her research interests include environmental policy and the role that mass media and other factors play in policy decisions. She is particularly interested in environmental issues in the western United States. Her current research  includes studies on environmental reporting trends, communication in environmental policymaking, and stakeholder use of environmental messaging strategies. Her previous research focuses on the adoption of non-consumptive recreational water rights by Colorado communities and the factors that influenced policy change within these communities, including mass media, policy entrepreneurs, stakeholder group involvement, and citizen engagement. </p>
