Please mark your calendars for the NCAR Fellows Retreat on November 1,
2011 at the NCAR Mesa Lab. This will give you an opportunity to meet
other postdocs and graduate students at NCAR while learning more about
the proposal process at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Note,
you must register to attend. We'll start with lunch and end with a
reception. <br>

<b>NCAR Fellows Retreat and Reception<br>
Opportunity to meet with NSF Program Officers from the
Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS)<o:p></o:p> <br>
Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at the NCAR Mesa Lab, 11:45 am - 5:30 pm.</b><br>

NSF/AGS Program Director Dr. Susan Weiler will present an overview of
NSF structure and function and some suggestions on how to approach NSF
program officers when you have an idea for a proposal. This will be
followed by a videoconference that will allow time for discussion with
other program officers about programs within the Atmospheric and
Geospace Sciences. Dr. Michael Morgan, Division Director for AGS will
provide a brief welcome, and program officers from most of the AGS
programs will be on hand as well. <o:p></o:p> <br>
<o:p> </o:p> <br>
The NSF Program Directors are eager to learn more about the AGS
postdoctoral community, and about each of you. In order to match you
with the most appropriate program officer for your research, please
provide the following information on or before October 21st. You will
need to register in order to attend this event here:

<o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p><b>Please come prepared to give a brief (2
minutes maximum) self introduction</b>:<o:p></o:p> <br>
To foster interdisciplinary communication skills and facilitate
collegial interactions during the afternoon reception, we encourage
each of you to prepare one PPT image and a 2-minute self introduction
to introduce yourself to your fellow post-docs. The NSF Program
Officers will not be listening in! This is just to catalyze
interactions across the AGS postdoctoral community. This is an
opportunity to practice speaking to a non-specialist audience. Prepare
your presentation as you would to talk to your grandparents or other
intelligent individuals who are not experts in your field. NO jargon!!!<o:p></o:p>

Be sure that your slide includes your name. Other than that,
anything goes. The goal is to make yourself memorable in a positive
sense – convey who you are as a person and as a professional. We are
purposely being vague to allow for maximum creativity. This is a great
opportunity for you to practice your communication skills. If in
doubt, think about ways to convey who you are, what you do, where,
when, and why.<o:p></o:p> <br>
Each of you will be strictly limited to ONE ppt image and a
maximum of 02:00 minutes. You do NOT want to be the person who delays
the start of the reception by talking too long. In any event, we will
not let you; Anyone who attempts to go over the 2-minute limit will be
cut off mid word. <o:p></o:p> We will collect your PPT file on or
before October 27, 2011.<br>
