With apologies for multiple postings

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Following the success of the last year first edition, we kindly invite you
to the 2nd 4-days Summer School “*Crash Course on Data Assimilation -
Theoretical foundations and advanced applications with a focus on ensemble
methods*,” taking place on May 22-25, 2018 at the Nansen Center (
www.nersc.no) in Bergen, Norway.

The 4-days school aims at PhD-level students and early-stage scientists
with beginner or no notions of data assimilation intending to apply data
assimilation as part of their research. The crash course will cover the
basic ideas and concepts of data assimilation, focusing on ensemble
methods, illustrated with real-scale / operational applications and with
the aid of practical exercises.

Updated information, including how to reach the location and the
facilities, will be progressively uploaded to the school website (
https://events.nersc.no/summer-school-%E2%80%9Ccrash-course
-data-assimilation-theoretical-foundations-and-advanced-applications-0
<https://events.nersc.no/summer-school-“crash-course-data-assimilation-theoretical-foundations-and-advanced-applications-0>
).

The temporary list of lectures and (tentative) topics is given below:

*Geir Evensen* (IRIS & NERSC, Norway): Basic principles of inference and
theory of variational and sequential Gaussian analysis, EnKF fundamentals
*Laurent Bertino* (NERSC, Norway): Background statistics, spatial
covariances, anamorphosis for non Gaussian variables
*Alberto Carrassi* (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for chaotic dynamics
*Yan Chen* (TOTAL, UK): Data assimilation for climate prediction
*Svetlana Dubinkina* (CWI, Holland): Data assimilation for paleo-climate
*Colin Grudzien* (NERSC, Norway): Numerical exercise on data assimilation
and dynamical systems
*Remus Hanea* (STATOIL, Norway): Data Assimilation for oil reservoirs
*Harrie-Jan Hendricks Franssen* (IBG-3, Germany): Data assimilation for
terrestrial system modelling
*Annette Samuelsen* (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for the ecosystem
*Yiguo Wang* (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for climate prediction

The deadline to apply is February, 28th 2018.
There are no participation fees, but we have a limited number of 30
participants that will be selected by the committee.
Subject to funding availability, we will provide full or partial financial
support for up to three students, based on the content and provenance of
the application.

The participants will be encouraged to bring over a poster for presenting
their research activities.

To register, visit the school website: https://events.nersc.
no/summer-school-%E2%80%9Ccrash-course-data-assimilation-
theoretical-foundations-and-advanced-applications-0.

*Important*: The crash-course is organized in conjunction with the *13th
International EnKF workshop* (http://www.iris.no/enkf/enkf-homepage) taking
place on May 28-30, 2018 in Bergen.
Deadline for submitting abstracts to the workshop is 15th February.
Participants to the Crash Course on DA are strongly encouraged to attend
the workshop too.

The organizing committee:

Geir Evensen (IRIS and NERSC, Bergen, Norway)
Laurent Bertino (NERSC, Bergen, Norway)
Alberto Carrassi (NERSC, Bergen, Norway)
