Dear all,

Happy Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, when the light of
candles is comforting.

I just wanted to wish each of you a happy holiday with time to do the
things that you enjoy. Being a grad student or postdoc can demanding,
partly because of dealing with high expectations (even of ourselves) while
having little structure or sometimes guidance. Given the demands of work
and life, we need to take time to take care of ourselves. I hope that you
are able to do so over the next few weeks!

On the topic of seminars . . .

   - Thank you, Curtis Walker, for your organizing of the "job application
writing group." It looks like you have quite a few people (at least ten)
interested! See the email from Curtis yesterday, if you are interested.

   - Thanks Christina McCluskey for organizing the Mock Panel Review
project. Everyone - be sure to sign up for that if you are interested (see
   earlier email).

   - I will send out an email soon with a report on last week's seminar on
writing a teaching statement with Kris Karnauskus, which went very well.

   - We have talked about hosting another job applications seminar on Jan.
3rd at 9 am, prior to the AMS conference in Phoenix. A few topics that
come to mind are: the CV, the research statement, or the diversity
statement. If you are in Boulder on Jan. 3rd and would like to get your
application materials in tip-top shape, please jump on to this Google
   spreadsheet
   <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gFj3UY5qyGOV577W33zA-70JmGzpCeRVvzceZ6_1pI0/edit?usp=sharing>
and make a note: (1) if you are available then, and (2) which topic you
would you prefer to cover. We need a critical mass to make something
   happen!

   - People from as far away as Australia who are on this list have been
asking if we can livestream these workshops. Sadly, in general the rooms
where we hold these sessions are not set up for livestreaming or Google
Hangouts with a group. We will try to share materials as we can, including
slides when available. Sorry about that.

Take good care, and wishing you a happy and relaxing holiday, wherever you
are.

- Val Sloan and the NCAR E&O/ASP staff
