[Grad-postdoc-assn] Following on from the retreat

Dear all,

We had a great turnout on Friday for the postdoc and graduate student
retreat, including 27 postdocs or grad students from NCAR|UCAR, 3 postdocs
from CU Boulder (CIRES), and one from NOAA.  Thank you all for coming, and
for participating so enthusiastically! It was invigorating to build
connections across labs and organizations, as well as to hear all of your
really wonderful ideas! See the photos below.  Also below are some follow
up points about the topics we covered.

*NCAR Professional Development Committee*
We are looking for representatives for the Professional Development
Committee who are from NCAR|UCAR and not in the ASP program, from CIRES,
and from NOAA, if you are interested.  *Please email me if you would like
to sign up or to learn more.*  The main work involved is discussing topics
for future seminars and planning the timing.

*NCAR Thompson Lecture Series Committee*
The Thompson Lecture Series Committee is also looking for additional
representatives from those groups, if you are interested in organizing
those biannual events. Magdalena will be sending out an email with the poll
for voting on guests shortly. * Please vote, if you haven't already!*

*Mock Review Panel Project*
Christina is following up on the Mock Review Panel Project, so please do
join in on that if you would like to get proposal-writing and reviewing
experience.  *See her separate email. *

*Job-Application Writing Group*
Curtis Walker and Chris Kruse are starting a short-term Job-Application
Writing Group.  This could be a daily writing session for one or two weeks,
or it could be a weekly brown-bag writing session, or it could be both
depending on who signs up and what they want to do.  The idea is to get
innervated by others to show materials to and get feedbacks and ideas from,
and to make good progress on producing items like research statements and
CVs. The push to do this more intensively is related to there being
academic job postings up right now with nearby deadlines.  *Please sign up

*Media Training*
It seemed like the media training was much appreciated and it was terrific
to see the interviews in action.  I noticed that many of you signed up for
more in depth media training.  *If you would like to sign up and missed

*Writing a Teaching Statement*
I am thrilled to announce that Professor Kris Karnuskas from CIRES at CU
Boulder has agreed to lead a seminar on writing teaching statements for
academic jobs on Tuesday, Dec. 18th at 2:00 pm.  It will take place in the
MMM Conference Room 2072 in Foothills Lab building FL3.  Coffee and tea
will be served. More on that soon.

We will also have a seminar on Thursday, Jan. 3rd to continue the effort on
preparing job application materials, and will keep you posted!

In the meantime, keep up the wonderful work that you are doing on your
science and collaborating with others!
