We seek a creative and ambitious scientist with interests in Geophysical
Fluid Dynamics to contribute to a programme of original research into the
dynamics and parametrisation of moist convection in the atmosphere. The
project aims to develop a new theoretical and conceptual understanding of
convective cloud genesis, including the sub-cloud dynamics, and the
dynamics of the growing updraught. To support this theoretical work you
will conduct numerical modelling of convective clouds, studying the basic
fluid dynamics of plumes, thermals, updraughts and downdraughts within
storms, and investigating the interactions of these systems with the
underlying surface and the larger-scale circulation. A statistical
framework will be developed, to describe the cloud genesis in terms of
stochastic functions which can be included in parametrisation schemes.



The project is funded as part of the NERC-Met Office “ParaCon” programme
which will, over the next 5 years, deliver new convective parametrisation
schemes to the UK Met Office. You will be part of a large collaborative
research team at Leeds, including scientists in the School of Earth and
Environment and the School of Mathematics, who have expertise in theory,
observations and modelling of convective clouds. You will also collaborate
closely with our partners at the Met Office, CNRM (Toulouse) and ICTP
(Trieste), as well as other ParaCon partners at the Universities of Exeter,
Reading and Cambridge.



You will be expected to contribute to the ongoing research in Atmospheric
Science and Fluid Dynamics in the Schools. Your work will lead to
significant publications in atmospheric and climate science and you will
also present your research at national and international meetings.



You will have a PhD (or be close to submitting) in a quantitative physical
science, such as Physics, Applied Mathematics or Meteorology. You will also
have a strong interest in and some experience in aspects of Fluid Dynamics
in addition to having experience of numerical modelling. You will have an
excellent track record of publication in high-quality journals and
excellent communication skills. Experience with programming on a linux or
unix operating system is desirable.
