Hi Barbara,

We have an opening at Sandia National Labs in Livermore, CA for a graduate
student intern to help with the Aeras next-generation atmospheric model
project during the summer of 2016. More information is below. I was
wondering if you could please please send the posting to the relevant CESM
listservs, as I think there are some good candidates there. Please have
interested applicants email me (ikalash at sandia.gov ) and apply on

Job Title: Student Intern – Aeras Researcher R&D Grad Summer

Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore, CA

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a summer researcher to help with a project involving the
development of a next-generation atmosphere model/code known as Aeras.
Possible summer projects include:

(1) Porting of the Aeras dynamical core to next-generation architectures
using the Kokkos Trilinos library;
(2) Verification/validation;
(3) Performance studies/code optimizations;
(4) Assisting Sandia staff with ongoing development/implementation of Aeras
physics.

Specific tasks will be determined based on the candidate’s interests and
background. Much of the work is conducted in interdisciplinary teams,
including interactions with other departments within Sandia as well as
external collaborators. Successful applicants will be exposed to
computational research at Sandia and will have a strong project-based
research experience working directly with Sandia staff scientists.
Successful candidates will also learn about and be expected to contribute
to Sandia software technologies.

QUALIFICATIONS

*Required*

(1) Strong academic performance (minimum GPA: 3.5/4.0)

(2) Communication skills appropriate for participating in
multi-disciplinary research teams.

(3) Enrollment in graduate school in applied mathematics, computational
and mathematical engineering, computer science, atmospheric sciences, or a
related engineering or science   discipline with a strong academic record;

(4) Software development experience and proficiency in C++.

(5) Experience with the theory and implementation of the finite element
method;

(6) Publication record indicative of relevant research expertise.

 *Desired*

        (1) Experience with the Trilinos software libraries preferred.
        (2) Knowledge of parallel programming such as MPI, OpenMP, CUDA,
and/or threads preferred.
        (3)    Knowledge of / experience with next-generation
architectures, e.g., multi-core, many-core, GPU systems preferred.
        (4) Experience with computational fluid dynamics. Experience
with the equations of atmosphere modeling (shallow water and hydrostatic
atmosphere model equations) an added bonus.

NOTE

Foreign nationals are eligible, as U.S. citizenship is not required for
this position.
