*Postdoctoral Researcher in Climate Modeling and Analysis*

*University of California, Berkeley*

The Department of Geography seeks applicants for a postdoctoral position to
conduct research on climate modeling and analysis as part of a
collaborative DOE-funded research project on the dynamics of the East Asian
monsoon. The position is available immediately for an initial 1-year term,
renewable for up to two additional years with satisfactory performance.

The project is on investigating the dynamics of megadrought (paleoclimate
and modern) over East Asia, with a focus on the role of the midlatitude
westerlies. Simulations using isotope-enabled Earth System models run at
sufficient resolution to accurately represent Asian orography and resolve
fine-scale features of East Asian rainfall climate will be undertaken. The
behavior of water isotopes with atmospheric circulation will be
investigated to facilitate interpreting simulated East Asian paleoclimate
with oxygen isotopic changes as seen in speleothem records.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. (or soon expecting one) in
atmospheric/climate dynamics and with expertise with numerical modeling and
dynamical and statistical analysis of atmospheric flows. Research
experience in water isotope modeling is a plus. S/he is expected to be
willing to carry out all aspects of the project, including model
simulations, implementation of detection algorithms, analysis (including
dynamical and isotopic), managing of data, manuscript writing, and
dissemination of research in publications and conferences. S/he is
expected to work in co-ordination with project collaborators, and supervise
students and assistants as needed.

Please submit a CV with a publications list and an outline of research
interests, and names of three references to Professor John Chiang, c/o
David Elvins (elvins at berkeley.edu <delvins at berkeley.edu>) 307 McCone Hall
MC 4767, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-4767, USA. Questions
regarding the position can be sent to Professor Chiang (
jch_chiang at berkeley.edu). Review of the applications will begin September
30, 2015 and the position will remain open until filled.
