Hi,

Thanks for your great questions and discussions at the retreat yesterday.
I thought our panel was just great.

Scott Mackaro of Vaisala, Inc. sent me a follow-up (see below).

Here are my questions:

1. Is anyone interested in reviewing the book he recommends below for the
newsletter? Just let me know. I'll purchase the book for you to read and
then it will become part of the NCAR library.
2. Is anyone interested in visiting Vaisala? I'm thinking that we could
organize an NCAR van to go. Again, respond to me.

Paula

 Paula,

Thank you for inviting me to speak with the group today. Hopefully
my perspective gave them some benefit.

I also have a few follow up topics for your consideration...

  1) Please let the group know that they are welcome to contact me directly
with any follow up questions or questions they thought were too personal
for a group discussion (scott.mackaro at vaisala.com).

2) During the session before the panel discussion, I heard you talk about
books that may be beneficial for career development. I wanted to recommend
'5' to you and the group (
http://www.amazon.com/Where-Will-Five-Years-Today/dp/1932319441). I found
it quite useful and actually revisit it at least once a year.

3) IF you thought it would be valuable, Vaisala would be more than happy to
host a visit to our office in Louisville to give a tour and have a
discussion about the private sector with the group.

Thanks again and be safe in the snow.

 Cheers

 SM

  Hi all,

Thank you again for agreeing to participate in our panel discussion. The
Title of the discussion will be "Career Tracks for Ph.D.'s" and each of you
is representing a different track. The nice thing is that some of you have
had experience in more than one track, which will certainly enrich the
discussion.

We have an hour slotted for this discussion as part of our ASP retreat.
The audience will be primarily postdocs, but graduate students at NCAR are
also invited. We invite all the postdocs at NCAR and UCAR, so it won't be
just ASP.

We'll have each of you give an introduction about yourself and what you
do. Maybe tell us a bit about what your day is like, and anything else
that you think is important about your career track. At that point, we'll
open it up for questions.

Here's my list of panel members:

Scott Mackaro, Vaisala, Representing scientists in the private sector
Peter Lauritzen, NCAR, Representing Ladder Track Scientists
Tom Bogdon, UCAR, Representing Scientists in a Federal Lab
Ethan Gutmann, NCAR, Representing Project Scientists
Jia Yue, Hampton University, Representing University Faculty Jobs

We'll be starting at 2:00 in the Main Seminar Room at the Mesa Lab.

I look forward to seeing you next week.

 Thank you!
Paula
