CIRES/PSD Research Associate (Post Doc)

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)
in Boulder, Colorado is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to
work in the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory/Physical Sciences
Division (ESRL/PSD) on understanding causes of climate variations and
change that contribute to tipping points in marine ecosystems. This is a
two-year position (subject to renewal after the first year) based at
NOAA/ESRL/PSD in Boulder, Colorado.

Responsibilities

The position responsibilities include diagnosing and explaining climate
variability and change that can impact marine ecosystems. The focus will
be on understanding changes in the physical system that lead to “tipping
points” or abrupt changes in the structure, function and services of
marine ecosystems. The position involves working with a team at NOAA
ESRL/PSD and the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL). The
candidate will apply observations, global climate models (GCMs), Earth
System Models (ESMs), and other tools necessary for understanding where,
when, and how marine ecosystems may reach a tipping point, such as
thermal stress that is lethal to organisms within an ecosystem. Key
topics include: application of GFDL's current ESMs to assess past and
future climate and marine ecosystem variability including abrupt shifts
at regional scales and the development of indices that provide
early-warning of possible climate and ecosystem tipping points.
Responsibilities include diagnosing observations and model runs.

Requirements

The applicant will have a PhD degree with detailed knowledge of climate
dynamics, physical oceanography, and atmospheric science. Specific
expertise in one or more of the following areas is desired: (i) climate
and geophysical fluid dynamics; (ii) nonlinear dynamics; (iii) climate
and earth system models and their applications; and, (iv) statistical
techniques. An interdisciplinary background with knowledge of marine
biogeochemistry and ecosystem dynamics will be beneficial for
contributing to the full scope of the project. Experience analyzing
large datasets and/or model output is critical, and the ability to
design and conduct GCM and/or ESM experiments is a plus.

The position will be filled as a Research Associate at the University of
Colorado Boulder and will be eligible for employee benefits, including
22 days of vacation (for a 100% position) per year.
