The next ASP seminar will be Wednesday of the next week (May 14th) 11
am at the Mesa Lab main seminar room.

The presenter is Prof. Eric Maloney from Colorado State University.
Below is the title and abstract of his talk.

The Madden-Julian Oscillation: Theory, Modeling, and Impacts
Prof. Eric D. Maloney
Colorado State University

This talk will review our current understanding of the Madden-Julian
oscillation (MJO). The MJO is the dominant mode of intraseasonal wind
and precipitation variability in the tropical atmosphere. An
up-to-date observational characterization of the MJO will be
presented, including discussion of results from the recent
CINDY/DYNAMO field program. New theoretical developments on MJO
dynamics will then be discussed, including a discussion of how
theoretical advances have helped us improve the representation of the
MJO in global models. The talk will then include a discussion of MJO
impacts and the potential for improved prediction of global weather
and climate phenomena based on knowledge of the MJO and its improved
representation in global models. Particular phenomena influenced by
the MJO that will be discussed include tropical cyclones, El
Niño-Southern Oscillation, monsoon active and break periods, and high
latitude extreme events.

As usual, there will be a lunch with the speaker in the ML cafeteria
after the seminar.
