Hi NCAR Postdocs,

The Thompson Lecture Series (TLS) is coming up on Apr. 16-18, 2014
featuring Dr. Ruth DeFries. You can read more about the TLS and Dr.
DeFries here:
<https://wiki.ucar.edu/display/aspthompson08/Thompson+Lecture+April+2014>
Abstracts for Dr. DeFries' two lectures are at the end of this email.

In addition to lectures, one of the primary goals of the TLS is to
provide a venue for postdoc / guest meetings and networking. There
will be lots of opportunities for formal meetings and socializing.

Please check the full schedule and sign up for individual meetings at:
<https://wiki.ucar.edu/display/aspthompson08/Schedule+Ruth+DeFries>

*Wed, Apr 16*
- 12:30-1:30pm, Lunch with postdocs (CG Cafeteria)
- 3-4pm, 2 slots for postdoc meetings (CG North Aud.)
- 6pm, Dinner at Centro

*Thur, Apr 17*
- 10:30am-12:30pm, 4 slots for postdoc meetings (ML Director's Conf. Rm.)

- 12:30-1:30pm lunch with postdocs (FL Cafeteria)

You can sign up for individual meetings and the potluck dinner at the
links provided above. Don't be afraid to sign up just because you
think your science interests are different than the speaker. You may
find that they have a breadth of interests and can also offer you
interesting insights on your career development.

We will send out a couple more reminders as we get closer, but please
go ahead and fill up those slots! Don't hesitate to drop us an email
if you have any questions.

Best wishes,
Minghui Diao

**Science Lecture
Thursday, April 17, 3:30-5 pm (Mesa Lab Main Seminar Room)

Title: Remote Sensing of Land Use Processes: Beyond Patterns of Land Cover
Abstract: There have been major advances in remote sensing of land
cover in the last several decades. With new sensors and the
availability of longer time series, possibilities for using remote
sensing not just to monitor land cover but to understand the processes
driving land use change, including the impacts of climate and
management, are becoming more feasible. The presentation will discuss
several approaches using different types of remote sensing data to
assess land use processes in tropical landscapes.

**General Interest Seminar
Friday, April 18, 11:00 am-12:30 pm (Foothills Lab large auditorium)

Title: Tropical Land Use in an Urban World
Abstract: In 2007, more than half of all the people in the world lived
in cities and towns. By 2030 that statistic is likely to rise to 80
percent. In an urbanizing world, tropical landscapes will face many
demands to produce food and energy crops, protect watersheds and
airsheds, and conserve wildlands. The management of these landscapes
affects the ability to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The
presentation will discuss both the opportunities and challenges for
tropical land use in an urban world, emphasizing the need to match the
scale of analysis with the scale at which decisions about landscapes
are made.
