Post Doc position at University of Colorado

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at
the
University of Colorado Boulder, is seeking a Research Associate
(“postdoctoral
researcher”)to work in the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL)
Physical Sciences Division (PSD) on studies examining sea ice variability
and
predictability, both locally and within the global climate system.

The position responsibilities include conducting both statistical analyses
and
modeling experiments aimed at improved understanding of sea ice variability,
including its predictability and its interactions with the broader climate
system on seasonal to interannual timescales. Of particular interest is
quantifying the potential two-way interactions between sea ice variations
and
changes in extratropical weather and climate and related extreme events. The
candidate will diagnose both observations and global climate model (GCM)
output, conduct GCM simulations, and employ other tools such as statistical
and/or dynamical models. The position involves working with a team at
CIRES/NOAA ESRL and the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL); it is
anticipated that the research will involve GFDL’s suite of climate models.

Requirements
• PhD with detailed knowledge of one or more of the following
disciplines: atmospheric sciences, sea ice physics and dynamics, and
physical
oceanography.
• Specific expertise in one or more of the following areas is desired:
climate and geophysical fluid dynamics; climate diagnostics; climate models
and
their applications; and statistical methods.
• Experience analyzing large datasets and model output
• Ability to design and conduct model experiments is desirable
• Conduct original research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and
give
presentations of research at science conferences
• Knowledge of and experience with: analysis/graphics packages (e.g.
NCL), geophysical data formats (NetCDF), programming language (Fortran), and
operating systems (Linux/mac OSX).
