PhD Position Vacancy

The “Institut für Meereskunde” (Institute of Oceanography) of the
University of Hamburg is part of the ‘KlimaCampus’, an interdisciplinary
network on climate research of university and leading independent
institutes in Hamburg. The “Institut für Meereskunde” invites
applications for
a PhD position
(wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in einem befristeten Arbeitsverhältnis)

Discipline: Oceanography / Meteorology / Physics
Outline: The research group theoretical oceanography at the University
of Hamburg focuses research on the large-scale ocean dynamics, role of
mixing and dissipation, understanding and parameterisations of effects
of (sub-) meso-scale eddies and the role of the oceanic circulation for
biogeochemical cycles.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be involved in the
research topic “Parameterisation of meso-scale mixing in the ocean” a
third-party fund of the DEUTSCHE FORSCHUNGSGEMEINSCHAFT (DFG-Project ED
159/4-1).Outside of these tasks associates have the opportunity to
further their academic education, in particular through the completion
of a doctoral dissertation. Results obtained by the associate through
project work may be used for the dissertation.
Requirements: MSc degree in physical oceanography or a related subject.
Candidates should have a strong background in physics, physical
oceanography or meteorology. Knowledge in the computer languages
FORTRAN, MATLAB, FERRET or similar is required.

The University Hamburg intends to increase the number of women amongst

Payment is according to salary group E 13 TV-L (65 %). Preferred start
date is as soon as possible. The position calls for 25,35 hours per
week. The fixed term employment will end after 34 months from date of
employment (see also § 2 of the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law
(Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz)). Preference will be given to disabled
applicants with equal qualifications.
