ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

(Computational Geoscientist/Tenure-track)

Department of Geology & Geophysics

The Department of Geology & Geophysics at Louisiana State University
seeks a full time tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in
computational geosciences. Responsibilities include supervising
graduate student research (MS and PhD), publishing research findings in
highly ranked journals; teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in
his or her area of specialization, and serving on committees in the
departmental, college, and professional societies. The successful
candidate is expected to develop a strong, externally-funded research
program and to provide excellence in teaching at undergraduate and
graduate levels and to provide synergy to existing focus areas in
evolution of sedimentary systems and earth materials and solid earth
processes.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in geological sciences or other relevant
discipline; record of published research; ability to attract funding.
Additional Qualifications Desired: Of special interest are individuals
who use high-performance computing to advance our understanding of Earth
systems and processes. Possible specializations include, but are not
limited to atomic/molecular dynamics and first-principles simulations,
fluid dynamics, geodynamics, geophysics, pore scale simulations of flow
and transport, remote sensing, and surface processes simulations.

The Center for Computation and Technology (CCT) at LSU has high
performance computing resources provided in part, by the Louisiana
Optical Network Initiative and national level resources provided by NSF
via the XSEDE project. These resources support work in
cyberinfrastructure, computational materials science and nanotechnology,
virtual reality, astrophysical fluid dynamics and most recently digital
media (see www.cct.lsu.edu for more information). Excellent
opportunities exist for collaboration with other departments in the
College of Science, College of Engineering, School of the Coast, and the
LSU Synchrotron Light facility (Center for Advanced Microstructures and
Devices).

LSU is committed to increasing faculty diversity and the department
welcomes applications from women and underrepresented ethnic, racial,
and cultural groups and from people with disabilities. An offer of
employment is contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background
check. Application deadline is January 9, 2013 or until a candidate is
selected. Inquiries should be directed to Search Committee, at
