"Developments in Lasers, Optics, and Robotics: Observations of
Feedbacks and Irreversibility in the Climate Structure"

Abstract:
Rapidly escalating demand for energy on the global scale is
reviewed and then linked to feedbacks in the climate system. A
quantitative analysis of those feedbacks requires a new generation of
observations focused on determining how those feedbacks in the
climate structure are linked to irreversibility.

The strategy for making the necessary observations in turn requires
the development and deployment of a series of new technical
approaches involving (1) the coupling of high intensity, single mode,
tunable lasers to high finesse cavities for carbon isotope flux
measurements, (2) ice penetrating radar from robotic platforms for
glacial mapping, (3) high accuracy infrared interferometery to
determine the relationship between forcing and feedback, and (4)
coupled free radical-isotope measurements to investigate the link
between carbon dioxide forcing, lower stratospheric water vapor, and
ozone catalytic loss.
