Hello,

Here's a workshop announcement from Karin Kirk. Application deadline
is May 7, 2010.

On the Cutting Edge workshop: Teaching Geoscience Online - June 23-29, 2010

Do you teach online? Are you considering moving your courses online
but unsure of the best way to proceed?

The online classroom offers a new way to reach students, yet it also
demands new adaptations of how we teach. Moreover, teaching
geoscience online brings its own challenges. How can one teach the
tried and true "rocks in a box" lab over the internet? What about
field trips, group work, and moving content, visualizations and
datasets into a whole new format?

The On the Cutting Edge workshop series will be hosting a summer
workshop to help us support these challenges. This workshop is for
faculty who teach geoscience courses in an online format, who are
planning on teaching online in the near future, or who are engaged in
research about online education.

Naturally, this workshop will take place online and will include a
series of web-based synchronous and asynchronous sessions from June
23 through 29. The workshop program will be a blend of presentations
from expert practitioners of online learning, panel discussions,
on-line chat sessions, and time for guided individual and small group
work. A primary focus of the workshop will be the development of
course components and teaching materials specifically designed for
use in online courses. These materials will be published on the
website for use by other faculty.

There is a workshop fee of $50, and the workshop application deadline
is Friday May 7. In advance of the workshop, accepted participants
will be asked to submit a course description, a module, an activity,
or a course component designed for an online course. For more
information (and to apply for the workshop), please visit the
workshop website at:
