EVENT 1

PLACE/DATE/TIME:
Estes Park School District. The last weekend in April, SATURDAY, APRIL 26
(9AM), we are hosting the Students as Scholars Institute (SASI) at
MacGregor Ranch in Estes Park. http://www.macgregorranch.org/

NEED:
We need to have at least 10 scientists in order for the student groups to
be small and more interactive. I will have scientists from CSU, and
hopefully CU. I really would hope from UCAR also.

ACTIVITY TO BE LEAD:
We will have approximately 100 hundred students from the area converge on
MacGregor Ranch at 9AM Saturday. In groups of 10 they will travel
(outside) from scientist to scientist seeing what they do in the field.

LAST YEAR our scientists included: a West Nile Specialist who caught
birds and showed the students how to draw blood, a Urban Heat Island
specialists who talked about surface temp and showed how to gather data,
a geologists who explained the different rock formations, a scientist
who specialized in propagation of hybrid sunflowers, an air quality
specialist, water quality specialist, CO2 scientist who measured the
output from the ground and a scientist who should the students how to
gather data on the layers beneath the topsoil. The kids then go back
to their home schools and develop projects based on the work of one of
the scientists. We publish the student work as a 'white paper'. The
scientists brought their equipment into the field and showed the
students how they work in the field.

CONTACT: Melinda Merrill, 970-586-5321 ext. 3222

BACKGROUND: Basically the institute was established to involve kids in
research science and guide them toward careers in research science. Last
year we established SASI in Kansas City with the help of scientists from
UMKC and KU. The program continues in KC this year. Since I have moved
to this area we are running dual programs. We will have approximately 100
hundred students from the area converge on MacGregor Ranch at 9AM
Saturday.

EVENT 2

PLACE/DATE/TIME: We would like to invite NCAR to set up a table or any
kind of science demonstration for our Take Our Children to Work Day on
April 24 at IBM Boulder, CO. The science event will be held from 8-9 am
that day.

NEED/ACTIVITY/(Questionable)BACKGROUND: Someone mentioned that in the
past, a representative from NCAR would come and share some information
about galaxies. It doesn't have to be about galaxies, any science
information would do.
