Hello everyone-
On behalf of the ASP office and the Thompson Lecture Committee, I am
please to announce that Dr. Michael Ghil has accepted our invitation to
be the spring 2007 Thompson Lecturer. Dr. Ghil has a joint appointment
between the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences department at UCLA and the
Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique at L'Ecole Normale Superieure in
Paris where we will be coming to us from on May 29th-31st. Dr. Ghil was
worked on many exciting problems in climate dynamics and has recently
given many fascinating talks on data assimilation.
For those unfamiliar with the Thompson Lectures, they provide a unique
opportunity for NCAR post docs and graduate students to have significant
interactions with a prominent scientist. Included during the two day
event are round-table discussions on career development and current
research, ample opportunities for individual interactions, and two
lectures open to the entire NCAR community.
Titles and abstracts for Dr. Ghil's seminars and a schedule for his
visit will be available soon. For more information on his recent (and
not so recent) work, please visit his web page at
http://www.atmos.ucla.edu/tcd/index.html.
Finally, we are looking to add to the number of post docs on the
Thompson Lecture committee. Two of our members will be leaving soon and
we'd like to add at least one new person to the committee. Sitting in
on the planning meetings for Dr. Ghil's visit is a great opportunity to
get familiar with the process and we welcome anyone who's thinking about
joining the committee to meet us for lunch on Thursday at 12:15 pm in
the Foothills Atrium. If you can't make lunch, but would like to join,
please send me an e-mail.
Thank you for all of your nominations and your patience with the voting
process during the last few months. We look forward to seeing you all
for another excellent Thompson visit.
Regards,
Kristen, Tom, Gyuwon and Ankur
