Dear postdocs and grads,

If you haven't already heard, the coolest thing going this summer is the
new journal discussion group. We're meeting for the first time this week
on Friday at noon in the ML Chapman room. As a special incentive, if you
show up this week, you get to help decide what papers we'll read and
what food we'll buy with our special allocation from Guy Brasseur. We'll
happily discuss any climatology topics that the previous 4 Thompson
lecturers have covered, and any of interest to the new crop of nominees.
If you'd like to consider joining and would like the first light
reading by Charles Keeling, please email me.

More details below:

An informal journal discussion group is being formed for any
interested scientists, postdocs, associates, etc. There will be a
series of readings and meeting over lunch or in the afternoon for
discussion. We may include some visitors from local institutions.

The motivation for starting a discussion group is two-fold (1) To discuss
climate topics more interactively, informally and in-depth than is
possible in regular talks and seminars. (2) To promote interaction and
learning among scientists at all levels and across divisions and
sections.

*Read a paper (or two short ones) every other week, starting this summer
*One or two people people take responsibility for being discussion
leaders when the group meets
*If scheduling allows, we will invite relevant speakers from local
institutions (i.e. CU, NOAA, within UCAR, etc.). They will not be asked
to give a formal talk but rather to come and be prepared for a
discussion format.
*Group meets over lunch or some other time TBD. Perhaps in a quieter
location like the Damon or Chapman room or outside while the weather is
nice.
*Refreshments or pizza or food TBD to be provided to motivate attendance
and to facilitate discussion.
*The kick-off reading is on monitoring carbon dioxide by Charles Keeling.

The organizational meeting is being held on Friday, July 20 at noon in
the ML Chapman Room. We are still collecting ideas for topics, but one
of the leading ideas is all aspects of the carbon cycle, including
monitoring, dynamics, biogeochemistry, and paleo problems. The first
reading is by Charles Keeling. Future readings will be assigned
depending on the interests of the group.
