[Grad-postdoc-assn] Cutting Edge Workshops on Academic Careers in the Geosciences

Some of you may be interested in these workshops. I did the Preparing
for an Academic Career in the Geosciences a couple years ago and found
it very useful. I've also heard the early career faculty workshop is
supposed to be good. Though the name says Geosciences, the group is
inclusive of meteorology and allied earth system sciences.

Hello,

I'd like to let you know about several spring and summer workshops that
have deadlines that are coming up soon (the first APPLICATION DEADLINE is
January 22).

In addition to the Cutting Edge workshop series, I've also included
information about a workshop in the Building Strong Geoscience Departments
Program on the topic "Connecting Geoscience Departments to the Future of
Science" that I think may be of interest to some of you.

Please help us publicize these opportunities by forwarding the email to
others who might be interested. While most of the workshops are for
faculty, note the workshop for grad students and post-docs on Preparing for
an Academic Career in the Geosciences. I've included details about each
workshop after the short list of workshop titles and deadlines.

BUILDING STRONG GEOSCIENCE DEPARTMENTS WORKSHOP
Connecting Geoscience Departments to the Future of Science: New Structures
for Research and Curriculum - deadline January 22

DETAILS FOR EACH WORKSHOP ARE GIVEN BELOW. Each website will take you to
the workshop page from which you can access the on-line application form
for that workshop.

  ++++++++++++++

Connecting Geoscience Departments to the Future of Science: New Structures
for Research and Curriculum
co-conveners: Tim Bralower, Geoff Feiss, and Cathy Manduca
April 25-27, Carleton College, Northfield MN
Application deadline - January 22
This workshop will consider how geoscience departments and programs will
evolve as geoscience becomes more interdisciplinary, embraces new
computational and analytic capacities, and participates in an increasingly
global community. Participants will consider the implications of these
changes on curriculum design, ways to support students and faculty in
research, and the nature of the departments themselves. Eric Barron
(UT-Austin), Mary Savina (Carleton College) and Kip Hodges (Arizona State
University) will make featured presentations at this workshop discussing
directions for geoscience research, curriculum design, and structures
supporting research and education.

Teaching Geophysics in the 21st Century
co-conveners: Barbara Tewksbury, Larry Braile, Vincent Cronin, John
Geissman, Sarah Kruse, and Michael Wysession
August 12-15, 2007, with optional field trip August 11
University of Michigan's Camp Davis, Jackson WY
application deadline: February 1, 2007
This workshop will bring together college and university faculty who teach
geophysics to explore a wide variety of topics related to teaching
geophysics effectively both in geophysics courses and as parts of other
courses taught in the undergraduate geoscience curriculum. Participants
will share exemplary laboratory and classroom activities, discuss course
content and curriculum, explore strategies for integrating geophysics
concepts and activities across the curriculum, and address issues in
teaching and learning geophysical concepts and processes.
