The Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy is one of the partners in a new
scientific project that will start very soon (1 January 2007). This
project, named <Solar-Terrestrial Centre of Excellence aims at the
creation of a knowledge center and the valorization of research results
in the research area of the Sun-Earth Relationships. Therefore we are
looking to strengthen our current team with a scientific researcher for
dealing with radiative transfer in the earth atmosphere

Description of the function
====================
The candidate shall collaborate closely with various research teams in
the Division of Chemistry and Physics of Atmospheres. He/she must be
ready to study in depth all aspects of the radiative transfer in the
Earth atmosphere, in the spectral ranges covering the ultraviolet to the
thermal infrared, on the purpose of supporting the researchers who meet
these problems in applications of remote sensing and numerical modeling
of the atmosphere.
  We expect that the candidate acquires theoretical knowledge regarding
the radiative transfer problems, and that he/she acquires the necessary
expertise to master related existing algorithms, and to be capable of
implementing these algorithms for specific applications or to develop
specific codes him/herself.
The candidate must be willing to travel occasionally (short duration
travels).

  This job will be filled in as a full-time, contractual position, based
at the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy. Recruitment is envisaged on
January 1, 2007, possibly on December 1, 2006.

  Required skills:
  =============
  - PhD in Science (Physics, Physical Chemistry) or Applied Science
  - knowledge about the Earth neutral atmosphere
  - being able to communicate fluently in English, orally as well as
written,
  in order to participate in international scientific meetings and
discussions
  and to publish in the peer-reviewed literature.
  - teamwork
  - expertise in scientific programming (Fortran or C)

  Specific expertise in any or more of the following fields is a bonus:
  - knowledge of French or Dutch (oral and written)
  - knowledge about atmospheric radiative transfer problems
  - experience with Matlab

  More information about this vacancy and the project can be obtained
from Martine De Mazière, Head of Section, by phone +32 (0) 2 373 03 63
or by mail martine at oma.be

  Applications
  =============
  Applicants should send a complete CV, including a list of publications,
  together with their letter of motivation, to
  BIRA-IASB, att. Philippe Iterbeke, HR Manager,
  Avenue Circulaire 3, 1180 Brussels,
  or by e-mail to philippe.iterbeke at aeronomie.be,
  before December 10, 2006.
