Hi Portal developers,
GFDL has an interesting position open for a scientific
data manager / programmer / sysadmin. (I'm circulating this
notice to assist GFDL.) The position will involve building a
data portal for this prestigious modeling Lab's outputs.
LAS and OPeNDAP skills will be highly relevant.

Data Services Specialist Task Description
This task addresses the need to support the design and implementation of
an improved GFDL data portal, including making GFDL's model output
available to research community and general public. The data specialist
shall work with existing Government and contract staff and be prepared
to assume primary responsibility for any of the duties described below.
Specific responsibilities include:
Maintain and augment existing mechanisms for web-based distribution of
model output in easily accessible form (as currently done through the
NOMADS server).
a) Maintain and continue to develop a simple user interface for
obtaining data, including descriptions of various model runs, and
pointers to detailed scientific descriptions of the models and
experiments.
b) Understand and participate in research community's efforts to
design and create useful web-based data portals (including Live
Access Server).
c) Be able to understand, expand, guide and critique the research
community's efforts to design and create useful web-based data
portals (including Live Access Server).
d) Advise GFDL's administration on related issues.
e) Act as a liaison and technical resource to the FMS group.
f) Serve as the initial point of contact for any issues related to
access of GFDL's model data.
Web Developer and Data Services Specialist Qualifications
1) General Experience: Two (2) years of related work experience .
2) Education: A MS in physical science is required.
3) Specialized Experience:
* Must have experience in a Unix/Linux environment.
* Must have experience with python, perl, XML, SQL.
* Must have experience in software-related systems analysis and
design.
* Must able to work independently.
* Must be able to communicate with people from a wide range
disciplines and backgrounds.
* Must have flexible weekday hours at first.
* Must be able to travel up to two weeks per year.
* Experience database administration is desired.
* Experience in large-scale software development is desired.
* Familiarity with numerical modeling is desired.
