<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:10.0pt">ECMWF uses its high-performance computing (HPC) facility to produce a time-critical twice-daily numerical weather forecast. The constant requirement to improve forecast accuracy drives numerical weather
prediction model development towards more complex and realistic representations of physical processes with higher spatial and temporal resolutions. These more powerful “Earth-system models” are extremely demanding on super-computing resources, especially considering
the time-critical nature of the operational forecast. Nowadays, speed ups in HPC systems come from the use of multiple cores and increased parallelism rather than from faster clock speeds. In practice, this means that global weather forecast centres are moving
gradually towards the use of exascale HPC platforms for operations and research. Efficiency, scalability of numerical algorithms and I/O, portability of computer code to accelerator technologies such as GPUs, have become more important software developments
concepts than ever.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="body" style="margin-top:6.0pt"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">For a successful and timely production of forecasts in day-to-day operations during the transition to exascale computing, significant infrastructure
developments are required to improve the flexibility and modularity of the ECMWF model IFS. The development of Atlas, an object-oriented software library for numerical weather and climate prediction is a crucial step towards this goal. Atlas supports scientific
computing for both research and time-critical operational applications at ECMWF, and its full incorporation in the IFS will facilitate its adaptation to future HPC architectures. Moreover, Atlas needs to be further integrated with the IFS I/O server, to support
fast delivery of specialized grid-point output data for high-performance data analytics (HPDA) on Cloud and highly converging HPC & Big Data systems.

<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:10.0pt">We are now looking to recruit a Computational Scientist who will contribute to further develop the ECMWF open-source Atlas library. The successful incumbent is expected to work on different aspects of scientific
computing and forecast product generation related to Atlas such as analysing the performance of its core numerical algorithms and improving their efficiency, developing new features and new code to enable coupling between different Earth-system model components
participating in the effort to seamlessly adapt Atlas and its use to future HPC architectures. Most of the development will be in C++ and executed on the powerful HPC cluster at ECMWF.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
