The Corning School of Ocean Studies at Maine Maritime Academy seeks a creative, task-oriented visiting Sawyer Professor to assist the Ocean Studies department with the development of a new baccalaureate degree
program in Coastal and Marine Environmental Science. We ask that you forward this information to your network of contacts in an effort to reach a broad suite of candidates with vision and curriculum development experience in the sciences, as well as consider

Environmental Science is presently recognized as a young but maturing scientific endeavor that represents an important addition to programs interested in human economy and life quality, climate change, ecosystem
delineation, and adaptation. Maine Maritime Academy is well poised for the addition of a Coastal and Marine Environmental Science major. In addition to state-of-the-art teaching and laboratory facilities, the Academy operates a fleet of vessels ranging from
a 49 foot coastal research vessel to a 500 foot training ship that is capable of serving as a deep sea oceanographic platform. The increasing global impacts of climate change, particularly in coastal regions,
calls for a skilled and knowledgeable workforce in environmental science, policy, management, and law. The new major would provide graduates with a strong background in marine science, marine policy, management, statistical methods, and research.

Maritime Academy seeks nominations and applications for an endowed Visiting Professor of Coastal and Marine Environmental Science to lead program development of the new major that will incorporate the unique strengths and character of Maine Maritime Academy.
The Visiting Professor will work with Ocean Studies faculty, the Provost, and the Senate Curriculum Committee, as well as MMA Admissions, Career Services, and Alumni Relations to develop this major, including the following tasks: (1) gather current, relevant
data on recruitment demographics and job placement, (2) consult with local, regional, and national organizations to align the curriculum with relevant skills and competencies needed for graduates, (3) identify courses and expertise needed in the curriculum,
(4) provide course and programmatic goals and objectives, (5) align the curriculum to the departmental and institutional goals, as well as to MMA’s strategic plan, and (6) define student learning outcomes and metrics to measure success. Additionally, the Visiting
Professor will develop an equipment plan for environmental science research, with particular emphasis on oceanographic/environmental sampling equipment suitable for the major. It is anticipated that the Visiting Professor position will be a part-time, stipend
position for a period of 6-9 months (negotiable) starting in February of 2019. For the appropriate candidate, a remote position will be considered, with periodic on-campus meetings with Ocean Studies faculty, and the larger community at Maine Maritime Academy.
