Linux platforms will be used. The main development language is FORTRAN, while processing of output is done with MATLAB as well as scripting languages. The research group maintains its own Linux machines but also uses other HPC facilities, such as those offered by LUNARC (<a href="http://www.lunarc.lu.se">www.lunarc.lu.se</a>). The research group of Dr Phillips at Lund University has a strong track record in creating new cloud models and applying them to tackle problems related to severe weather, cloud glaciation, lightning and mechanisms for aerosol effects on cold clouds. </span><span lang=FR><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=FR style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif;color:black'> </span><span lang=FR><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=FR style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif;color:black'>The researcher will study the microphysics of glaciated clouds with a high-resolution model. These questions will be addressed: (1) What is the balance between the two precipitation mechanisms for ice and liquid phase in a given cloud? (2) How is the balance dependent on the major environmental factors (e.g. those controlling cloud basin temperature)? (3) How does the balance between precipitation mechanisms affect the intensity of charge separation and lightning frequency in storm?
