 to serve as an Aerosol Scientist for the Langley Aerosol Research Group Experiment (LARGE). The scientist will develop and apply active remote sensor systems and advanced in situ instruments to characterize atmospheric aerosols, clouds, trace gases and meteorological/dynamical
 processes.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto"><b><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black">Responsibilities<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto"><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black">The Scientist will lead a team providing expertise to the development, verification and scientific application
 of active remote sensing techniques to measure vertical profiles of aerosol/cloud optical properties. Work contributes to development of the next generation of airborne and spaceborne high spectral-resolution and differential absorption lidar instruments.
 Work requires leading the development, verification and documenting of algorithms for controlling instrument operation and retrieving calibrated atmospheric constituent data from complex signals in combination with ancillary platform and meteorological data.
 Responsibilities include leading the development and validation of complex, highly efficient instrument control and data acquisition software such as processing code to acquire multiple channels of polarized lidar signals and to retrieve trace-species concentration
 and wavelength-dependent aerosol/cloud extinction, backscattering, and depolarization data for real-time display and archival.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto"><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black">Provides leadership and expertise in characterizing and improving the performance of field-deployable in
 situ instruments for measuring aerosol and cloud properties for use in addressing NASA SMD and ARMD measurement objectives. Responsibilities include leading and conducting laboratory and field experiments to characterize, improve and document the performance
 of instruments designed to measure aerosol number densities, size distributions, mass loading, black carbon fraction, scattering/absorption/extinction coefficients, hygroscopic properties and bulk composition. Work will entail developing empirical methods
 for correcting data sets for sampling losses and biases and may also include characterizing and improving aircraft-mounted inlets and cloud probes designed to measure particle size, shape, phase and angular scattering.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto"><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black">Leads technicians and engineers in calibrating, integrating and operating lidar and/or in situ aerosol
 and cloud instruments at ground installations or onboard mobile platforms to support atmospheric/ocean studies, source characterizations, technology demonstrations, satellite instrument validation experiments and environmental assessments. Post-mission duties
 may include establishing measurement precision and accuracy using analyses that incorporates data from radiosondes, models and collocated satellite sensors, producing and archiving calibrated data sets and conducting collaborative analyses to address critical
 mission science and technology objectives. Results from instrument development activities and scientific data analyses are presented at science team meetings, conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.
