<p>Dr. Esther Mullens, Assistant Professor in the University of Florida, Department of Geography, is seeking a
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Masters or PhD student for a Fall 2019 start
</span>with a focus in Atmospheric Science/Climate Science. The University of Florida is a top-ranked, Carnegie Research 1 (R1), land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant university. It is the Flagship University of the State University System of Florida and a
member of the Association of American Universities. </p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Research Areas</strong></span>: Research focus areas may include analyzing heavy sub-daily rainfall in the U.S. southeast using observations and models, multi-model analysis of extreme precipitation in statistically
and/or dynamically downscaled climate models, or developing climatologies of wildfire incidence/severity and associated meteorological environments. Prospective students are encouraged to put forward their own research ideas as well as indicate their interest
in the general topics listed. <br>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Student Profile</strong></span>: Students should have a degree in Meteorology, Geography with a focus on Physical Geography/Climatology, or a related field. Some experience with computational data analysis,
and at least basic familiarity with one or more of the following: UNIX, R, NCL, Python, Matlab, GIS. Students should have experience in word processing software, (e.g., Mircosoft office suite). Good verbal and written communication skills are desired. We are
seeking a student who has an enthusiasm for their discipline, a willingness to learn new skills, to work in teams and independently, and to solve problems and make decisions. A strong work ethic and personal integrity is highly valued. Dr. Mullens and the
Department of Geography support the professional development of underrepresented students. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Funding</strong></span>: Guaranteed 2 years of 9-month research assistantship (RA) plus summer teaching assistantship options. After two years, continent on availability of teaching assistantships, external
funding and/or fellowships. Funding includes monthly stipend and tuition waivers. Students also have the option of medical benefits. </p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>About the Department</strong></span>: The Department of Geography at the University of Florida (<a href="https://geog.ufl.edu/">https://geog.ufl.edu</a>) has 18 Faculty spanning multi-disciplinary research
in the following focus areas: (1) Geospatial Analysis (2) Medical Geography (3) Earth System Science (4) Environmental & Social Change. The Department is composed of more than 60 graduate members, with a diverse, friendly, and collegiate learning environment.
Located in Gainesville, FL, the University is located in a vibrant urban community and within close proximity of the natural beauty of North Central Florida, and the Gulf and Atlantic coastlines. </p>
