<p class="MsoNormal">The Cold Curation Scientist will support the Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science Division (ARES) at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) in the field of advanced curation. ARES staff members’ backgrounds include geology, chemistry,
astronomy, physics, biology, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. ARES curation staff are responsible for the curation and analysis of a wide range of solar system materials including the Apollo lunar samples, meteorites, cosmic dust/interplanetary
dust particles, cometary samples, solar wind samples, and terrestrial analogs. ARES advanced curation staff conduct research, explore and invent new innovative technologies and techniques for collection, handling, characterization, analysis, and curation
of astromaterial samples that could be used in next generation human and robotic space exploration missions and current collections.

<p class="MsoNormal">The Cold Curation Scientist will support Johnson Space Center’s activities for long duration space flight through the JETS Contract.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The selected candidate for this role will: <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Interface with facilities personnel, curation technicians and scientists, and JSC facilities/engineering support to develop a cold curation facility to include:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">-20°C walk-in clean freezer<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Nitrogen-gas purged glovebox<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Ancillary sample handling equipment<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Cold operations equipment, including gear for all curation staff who use the facility<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Direct facility design, maintenance, purchasing, and development tasks for a cold curation sample processing facility.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Develop sample handling techniques of cold materials, including ices and organic-rich extraterrestrial materials such as meteorites and lunar samples.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Conduct directed and/or competed research on the storage, transport, handling, and non-destructive characterization of volatile-rich and/or temperature-sensitive extraterrestrial materials, especially lunar polar samples and cometary returned
samples, but also returned samples from icy moons (Europa and Enceladus) in the future.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Interface with external organizations and collaborators to support cold curation activities including: universities, other NASA centers, research institutions, and commercial vendors.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Provide mission support for cold/volatile-rich sample return missions, including teleconferences, meetings, project documents, schedules, short-turnaround studies, and occasional travel (domestic and international).<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Write reports, technical documents/records, and scientific papers as needed.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Work independently to meet given deadlines and schedule constraints and track and monitor ongoing work.<o:p></o:p></p>
