<p>What You Will Do</p>
<p>The Earth and Environmental Sciences Division (EES) at the Los Alamos
National Laboratory (LANL) seeks outstanding postdoctoral candidates to
perform world-class experimental atmospheric aerosol and greenhouse gas
research in an interdisciplinary environment to solve problems in
climate, energy, air pollution and national security. The candidate will
be part of the Center for Aerosol-gas Forensic Experiments (CAFÉ) with
state of the art aerosol chemistry, microphysics and optical property
instrumentation: soot particle high resolution aerosol mass spectrometer
(SP-AMS), single particle soot photometer (SP2), multiple wavelength
Photoacoustic Soot Spectrometers (PASS: 375, 405, 532, 781 nm),
Humidified Cavity Attenuated Phase Shift Particle Extinctiometer (CAPS
PMex), laser aerosol sizer, scanning mobility particle sizer,
centrifugal particle mass analyzer (CPMA), and potential aerosol monitor
(PAM). Trace gas capabilities include laser based and isotope specific
instruments (Picarros-CO2, CO, 13CH4, HOD, Aerodyne-N2O isotope and
Aeris-CH4, C2H6) and solar spectrometers for regional scale trace gas
monitoring (Bruker 125HR and EM27-SUN, and Pandora). The candidate is
expected to sustain the strong scientific synergy with our field
campaigns for DOE’s Atmospheric Radiation Monitoring (ARM) program,
aerosol process research for DOE’s Atmospheric Systems Research (ASR)
program and regional greenhouse gas monitoring as part of our
international Total Column Carbon Observing Network (TCCON)
collaboration.</p>
<p>The candidate will design and conduct laboratory and field studies
focused on biomass burning, fossil combustion and/or explosion processes
and signatures for climate science and chemical forensics.
Collaborations with fire and explosion dynamics modeling groups in EES,
particularly using measurements to improve treatments of the fate,
transport, and climate effects of mixed light absorbing aerosols are
expected. There will be opportunities to participate in DOE aerosol
field campaigns and for regional greenhouse gas flux verification. There
are also opportunities for sub grid process scaling using satellite

<p>What You Need</p>
<p>Minimum Job Requirements:</p>
<ul><li><p>Demonstrated experience in real-time laboratory and field atmospheric measurements, particularly of aerosol processes.</p></li><li><p>Demonstrated ability to integrate large field data sets with
models to gain process level understanding of aerosols and trace gas
signatures of sources and processes.</p></li><li><p>Self-motivated with a strong background in atmospheric chemistry,
aerosol analysis, in situ and remote sensing, field and laboratory
experiments and simulations. Some combination of these is preferred.</p></li><li><p>Excellent communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications, presentations, and the cover letter.</p></li><li><p>Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary scientific environment.</p></li><li><p>Existing knowledge or willingness to understand energy, environmental, and national security applications.</p></li><li><p>Research aimed at improving understanding of aerosol and carbon
cycle processes for climate science is open to all qualified applicants.
Research in explosion forensics requires Q clearance that normally
requires US citizenship.</p></li></ul>
<p>Desired Skills:</p>
<ul><li><p>Programming experience with merging, analyzing and synthesizing
large data (Igor, Python, Fortran, Java, C/C++, R, and/or MatLab).</p></li><li><p>Operating state-of-the art aerosol & gas instruments in the field or laboratory.</p></li><li><p>Record of collaborative research with modelers and writing proposals.</p></li><li><p>Experience synthesizing results of large data sets and analysis
using process or chemical transport modeling (WRF-Chem, GEOS-Chem,
PART-MC/MOSAIC).</p></li></ul>
<p>Education:A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Chemistry, Physics, Civil or
Chemical Engineering, Remote Sensing or a related field. The candidate
must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the
appointment and be within five years of completion of the Ph.D.
Candidates may also have previous experience including postdoctoral
experience.</p>
