<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Cambria",serif;color:black">Northwestern University’s Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences, in partnership with the Northwestern-Argonne Institute of Science and Engineering invites applications
for a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in the characterization and simulation of extreme precipitation. The successful candidate will participate in a collaborative project focused on urban vulnerability and resilience. Candidates with expertise in weather
radar analyses (e.g., Py-ART), high resolution model simulations (e.g., WRF), and/or urban hydrology are particularly encouraged to apply. As part of a multi-institution project, the successful candidate will be an employee of Northwestern University under
the supervision of both Dr. Scott Collis (Argonne) and Dr. Daniel Horton (NU). Ideal candidates will have strong analytical skills, a background in Python, previous research experience with either NEXRAD or WRF, and excellent oral and written communication
skills. Computing resources are available from both Argonne and Northwestern’s High Performance Computing clusters. In addition to the primary project foci, candidates will have opportunities to collaborate on DOE- and ARM-funded research. The position starts

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Cambria",serif;color:black">(1) Comprehensive knowledge of the atmosphere. Preference will be given to applicants with established knowledge of organized convective systems.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Cambria",serif;color:black">(2) Comprehensive written and oral skills as evidenced by presentations and publications.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Cambria",serif;color:black">(3) Comprehensive analytical skills including high level computational skills and an ability to apply diverse algorithms to meteorological data. Comprehensive knowledge
of the Python programming language or a willingness and ability to learn. A dedication to good coding practices including version control, testing and self-documenting code.</span><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:-webkit-standard;color:black"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Cambria",serif;color:black">(4) A strong understanding of active remote sensing (weather radar). An understanding of dual polarimetric Quantitative Precipitation Estimation. Applicants without
radar experience are still encouraged but will need to convince the committee they will be able to quickly acquire the aforementioned skills.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Cambria",serif;color:black">(5) Strong skills in configuring convection resolving models. A preference will be given to applicants with experience in configuring and running WRF on many core machines.
Demonstrated experience in simulating mid-latitude MCS/MCCs will be strongly preferred. Applicants without modeling experience are still encouraged but will need to convince the committee they will be able to quickly acquire the aforementioned skills.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
