The successful applicant will work as part of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) and will help with the modernization of AVO’s seismic network and associated research and processing. The new hire will split time between teaching and research, with 1/4 time teaching (3-4 credits per 9 month academic year) and 3/4 research. The new faculty member will also support UAF’s service and outreach mission. After an initial startup period, the new hire will be expected to raise additional research support from external grant agencies apart from AVO by leading and collaborating on proposals for innovative new research. The initial startup period is largely supported by AVO to assist with the remaining analog-digital conversion of its remote seismic network.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;background:white;box-sizing: border-box'><span style='font-family:"Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;color:#444444'>We invite candidates with a Ph.D. in volcano seismology or related field. Candidates should have a keen interest in research and monitoring volcanoes in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, and working closely with AVO partners at the state and federal level. Alaska is home to over 54 historically active volcanoes, with an average of over two eruptions per year that is in part monitored by over 200 AVO seismic stations. Abundant research and collaborative opportunities exist at the GI, with the Alaska Earthquake Center and the Wilson Alaska Technical Center and research groups in other areas of earth, atmospheric, and space sciences. Teaching will be at the graduate and undergraduate level, and the successful applicant will be expected to advise graduate students.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;background:white;box-sizing: border-box'><span style='font-family:"Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;color:#444444'>-This position has a 1/4 time teaching appointment at the Department of Geosciences, which corresponds to 3-4 teaching credits per academic year.
